Put together a list of assets and debts.
Come up with a list names and addresses of people and organizations who stand to inherit.
Determine whether a probate is necessary. (consult with an attorney to determine.)
If probate is necessary, file a petition with the court, asking the court to appoint him or her to carry out the terms of the will—or if there is no will to follow the state’s rules for handling a deceased person’s money and possessions (estate).
Pay the decedent’s outstanding bills and debts.
File tax returns and pay taxes.
Distribute the remaining assets to the heirs and others named in the will.
